Which protagonists changed the most in these two books: Animal Dreams and The Catcher in the Rye?

Which protagonist made the biggest tranformation from the beginning of the story to the end of the story? Cosima Noline from Animal Dreams or Holden Caulfield from the Catcher in the Rye? Please help.

What an interesting comparison. I love both of these novels, but never thought to look at them side by side.

That’s a tough one, actually. I think Cosima’s transformation was more apparent, and therefore seems larger, but Holden’s is so big on such a deeper level. They both deal with issues of identity. Cosima comes to terms with her past and where she’s from. Holden comes to terms with his present and where he’s headed.

It’s really a toss-up. If it’s for homework, I’m sure either answer is correct as long as you support yourself. I love the romantic elements of Cosima’s transformation–that idea that you CAN go home again. But I’m more personally affected by Holden’s and his learning to accept life for what it is and how fruitless it is to fight for a cause that is impossible. In many ways, I think Holden’s transformation is bigger because it saves his life in a way. Cosima’s just allows her to understand hers.
